Sardar movie review in hindi

Once upon a time, there lived an agent wearing a mask (of a theatre actor) who goes by many names. Any Mission Impossible is a mission possible for the agent. He is, of course, the ‘best’ agent to have operated in the Indian Army. Until his mask falls and the face is exposed.

Why was Sardar made?

Sardar is a 2016 Indian biographical film based on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The film narrates about how Sardar Patel united India with some intense moments from his life. It is a period drama directed by Advait Chandan and produced by Shri Ajit Singh.

What do I say about Agent Raja Ravi Verma?

This man, who goes by many names—Agent Raja Ravi Verma, Sardar Udham Singh, The Best of Agents… —is not a protagonist that you’d expect to care about in a light-hearted entertainer like Sardar. He’s so cold he can breathe ice into your very veins. There isn’t one single shred of warmth to him. But then again, he has a case of ice-cold personality going for him (no pun intended).

Sardar movie review: Karthi shines as an action star in this flawed but watchable spy thriller

Such an ambitious project with so much riding on it

Sardar, a biopic on India’s first Field Marshal of Indian Army, General Sir Harbaksh Singh (1882-1964) was bound to polarize people. Also, with big names like Darshan Kumar as Sardar Udhampur Singh/General Harbaksh Singh and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as his wife Komal Kaur there was more than enough reason to keep your fingers crossed that all would go well on both fronts. The result of that gamble?

The plot and storyline

Once upon a time, there lived an agent wearing a mask (of a theatre actor) who goes by many names. Any Mission Impossible is a mission possible for the agent. He is, of course, the ‘best’ agent to have operated in the Indian Army. Until his mask falls and face turns out to be that of Sardar Udham Singh (Akshay Kumar). If you think that your Google search results would yield something else, then you are wrong.

What works?

Having earned close to ₹13 crore in less than one week at a box-office, Sardar lives up to its promise of a crackling action drama that keeps you hooked from start to finish. It has been released on Netflix, which makes it even more fascinating, as you can now binge watch it all over again. The story revolves around spuniversity.

Sardar Movie Review: Karthi is brilliant in this ambitious film, overloaded with message

What doesn’t work?

Indian cinema industry has churned out quite a few political dramas since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office. However, there hasn’t been any that captured what exactly happened with Suresh Prabhu (currently Union Minister for Railways), who was railways minister when Modi took charge as prime minister. The other name that has come up in speculation about who might be ‘Chhota Sardar’ is Sambit Patra, BJP spokesperson.

Does it live up to the hype?

Sardar is based on a true story of Major Udham Singh who avenged his brother’s death by killing one of those responsible for planning that brutal event. It was, after all, Sardar Udham Singh who gunned down General Michael O’ Dwyer, creating history in India. The film may not be what it could have been had it chosen to go deeper into its subject but will nevertheless impress a lot more than most movies claiming to be about martyrdom.

Is this good for India’s image abroad?

Sardar has been criticised for its negative portrayal of India abroad. The role of Indian prime minister, played by Manoj Bajpayee, has been described as one-dimensional. Although Saurabh Shukla plays a villain who struggles to please his corrupt boss, he too is accused of representing everything wrong with India.

My Rating

8/10. Good storyline. Enjoyable to watch. I don’t know why they chose Akshay Kumar to be part of it, when there are so many other better actors like Emraan Hashmi or Irrfan Khan who could have done a much better job at portraying Udham Singh. The flow of scenes was a bit slow because it was over two hours long, but overall it wasn’t bad for a Hindi film!
