Anyone who knows anything about India knows that the two greatest political leaders in Indian history are Mahatma Gandhi and Lal bahadur Shastri. These great men, whose birthdays fall on October 2nd and December 25th respectively, have given India its identity as one of the strongest democracies in the world today. While they led vastly different lives, Shastri and Gandhi both believed in peaceful, democratic solutions to political conflict and each played an important role in shaping modern India as we know it today.
A short history of India
Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of India after Jawaharlal Nehru. He was a veteran of the Indian independence movement, participating in activities such as Satyagraha, Salt Satyagraha, the Quit India Movement. He also served as Minister of Home Affairs (1956-57), Minister of Power (1964-66), and Minister of Transport & Communications (1966-69). Mahatma Gandhi led India to freedom from British rule.
